Grayscale Riven

Grayscale

I discovered a plethora of old Riven files, hidden away in the depths of my computer. I guess i never went looking for them before now. Here's an interesting one: the grayscale representation of Catherine's prison island. I created this in Illustrator, using the method we invented in Myst. When the grayscale data is "extruded" (using a 3-D program) it is transformed into something that looks like an island.

If you want to try this yourself, using this prison island data, I've included the original data for you, as an Adobe Illustrator file (click on link below).

what's the cyan x in the center for?

I'm using Maya. It imports illustrator files (.ai) but not PDF. Is there a general way to do this?

Oh, I'd like to ask: would you happen to have any old good quality unused renders?

I've seen the lab and the garden but in not-so-great quality.

I changed the format of the above file to an Illustrator file. If there's interest, I'll also try to load the Garden Island.

I didn't save renders. I only saved artifacts from the actual production and planning. I do have a few high-res, vector-based symbols (in Illustrator), like Gehn's symbol... or the Rebel symbol. These might be interesting.

I always find these posts funny :)
About once a month (used to be more) I'm searching all over the web for Riven images or animations (like at yantra3d.com or fcurve.com) I haven't seen before and you just have the stuff somewhere on an old computer :-)

I'm looking for all stuff you have on Riven, vector or pixel-based. This week I planned to paint the 'falling man' picture (from the Riven booklet) on my room's wall. I will upload it somewhere if it's done.

Sorry, it looks like I don't have the falling man image... or at least I can't easily find it. But let me know if you're looking for something specific – I have tons of other vector images (from either Myst or Riven) and I could turn up anything.

Personally, Gehn's symbol, from Riven, is my favorite... and it holds up at any size.

If there's a continued demand for these items, I may create a temporary blog to post all of them; tinselman doesn't seem like the best venue.

Well, in all honesty I'm interested in everything Myst & Riven related - is there a way for me to receive all the data you are talking about? :)

If choices need to be made, I choose Riven over Myst, and Jungle Island above the others. And of course, I'd like to see Gehn's symbol too :)

Any chance you could upload the Myst Island extrusion model? :) I'm interested in any and all content from Myst or Riven though! :D

There's definitely a demand out there for Myst and Riven art/source files. Thank you for releasing these as Myst was and still is my all time favorite game.

I remember watching a making of Myst video several years ago and I swore the grayscale images for the landscapes were painted in Photoshop with a Wacom tablet. I'm surprised to find out that they were done in Illustrator. It was very interesting and informative to see the file in wireframe!

just popping in to continue demand ;)

I'd also like to see this kind of sruff!

Thanks for posting this! I'm going to give it a shot in blender, see what I can do.

This is wonderful! I would also like to see the Garden island height map, plus any others you may have handy.

There's a great tutorial on turning a height map into 3-D geometry using Blender:

I've tried this with great success.

Are you still planning to display some of your Riven/Myst production art on a small temporary blog?
That would be so great. I love collection small things from the games.
And if they are - as you say - Illustrator files, then I see a potential for great desktop wallpapers :-)

I'm always looking for behind the scenes imagery and rare imagery from myst or riven. I'd be thrilled to see anything. Hope you decide to do it.

Also popping in to continue the 'demand'... even though I have come to this party rather late; one can always try!
First of all: thank you for the provided content so far,Robyn.
Have you ever posted the symbol? I can't seem to find it,but then again this could be another one of your puzzles...it works very well as bait for me

Has this temporary blog ever been realised, and if so; does it still exist or does anyone have it's posted content?

Hey, you can find some of the art at mrillustrated.com

I would love to see more heightmaps, like Garden Island and Myst. If you could make another blog for Myst and Riven production files, I'm sure that would please hundreds of devoted fans.
