Fake Worlds

I haven't played around with CG in a long time, but three days ago I discovered an unbelievably powerful application that calls itself Terragen2, and I haven't had so much fun building things in 3D in ages; not since I first stumbled upon that very first version of StrataVision 3D.

Terragen2 is the ultimate erector set. It's narrowly focused in it's purpose, but it's a ton of fun (though I'm just beginning to understand it). Yesterday, I created this terrain (feeling child-like in the process):

Hey, glad to have you back.

I see those and picture myself on an alien world. I'm not yet decided if I must be wearing some sort of suit so I can breathe or not.

I love Terragen! I started messing around with it back in 2000 just for fun. Every landscape made in there just seems so real!

(Happy New Year, by the way!)

(Sorry for the multiple posts guys... I was having serious browser/keyboard issues. :P ) (She scurries back into her corner, red faced.)

I'd never heard of Terragen before, but thank you so much for sharing all your great discoveries with everybody because I am now enjoying it, myself. I wish everything was free; it took me less than a minute after seeing your pictures to start making a world of my own.

Awesome!

Downloaded myself a copy, though I haven't had a chance to play with it yet. (Too busy being sick.)

Welcome back, and I hope everyone else has a non-sick 2008!

Terragen2 is out?! I've used the first one (understanding only the meanest basics, mind you) and I was excited about the next one -

Your landscape looks quite forboding. Is it habitable? Are there many dangerous creatures to contend with?

Posted by: indie | Jan 7, 2008 3:31:22 PM

Habitability depends upon whom will be doing the inhabiting, I suppose. Judging from the general lack of visible vegetation, I'd say you're lucky if you get to shake hands with a moneran.

Not that that isn't exciting, or, on occasion, dangerous.

*cough*.

Very interesting! I hope that it works for the Mac! It looks like something right out of a dream! Very nice!

I adore terragen. Now, if I could just find a way to put actual trees, or two levels of water, so we could have waterfalls :)

You said it. I totally agree. I used to take my Terragen terrain files and import them into Moray so I could make lakes at different levels and add trees. The effect was nowhere near as good of course.

From what I've read, you'll soon be able to add two levels of water, though the water lacks some realism. There's also a way to import trees and plants from other applications; virtual forests of trees. (and yes, it does run on a mac)

Is there a way to import a terragen file into maya?
