Birth and Evolution

Evolution_1

Having been an early Apple Newton adopter, I've been waiting for something like the announcement of yesterday for a long time. Here's some links you might find interesting...

Still curious? Here's some more links...

I still use my Newton 2100 for a VT100 terminal for connecting to the SGI. Alas, the battery disallows being disconnected from the power adaptor, so I've taken to pencil and paper pad for whatever mnemnomnic assistance I require.

The iPhone looks kewl. But I'd almost rather it came without the phonage feature. (I hate the telephone.)

Aaaahhhhh, I *knew* there was something about you Robyn, that I could not quite put my finger on. You were also an early Newton adopter. I still have a 120 that I kept as a memento, and have always hoped for a replacement for it. The good news is that the iPhone is running an embedded flavor of OS X and a resurgent "Newton" is much more possible now than ever before.

I think we announced Myst at the same MacWorld during which the Newton MessagePad was announced... in Boston. Apple had this exhibit full of Newtons where you got to play with them. The handwriting recognition seemed pretty bad, but I didn't care... I had to have one.

The interface was amazing! I loved that Newton! And yeah... the handwriting recognition had some problems... it just took a little practice.

I still have that Newton. And I still have my Newton 2100. It works like new... and all the data is perfectly intact!

When Apple bizarrely nixed the visionary Newton device (before it even had legs to stand on), I was, like many others, shocked and a bit frustrated. Eventually I went searching for a smaller "PDA". I went through a couple: a windows-based device (horrible), a Palm device (also bad). Then I returned to my Newton until I could no longer stand the size of it.

I was always sorry I never got an Newton Emate. (they were beautiful little machines). Recently, I happily discovered they're all over the place on ebay (and priced very low!); I immediately bought two... one for me and another for a friend. I was hoping to get it up and running and start using (and syncing) a Newton to OSX, but the task proved to be a headache. (argh)

It would be incalcably cool to see the Newton resurge. Palm pilots have tiny, tiny screens that I find are just too tiny for my eyes. The Newton did much better.

The eMate was great. A perfect laptop for those who just wanted to journal on a trip (I carried one on my 2001 trip from Tacoma, WA to Chicago). And the keyboard was nicer than almost any other keyboard I've used (including the floating keyboard you could get for the MP).

Alas, it was not as well built as the MP2100, and the screen on mine didn't last.
